I never thought I’d find myself in this position, but sadly, Pet Insurance only covers dental work in cases of traumatic injury. My sweet Scooter had distemper as a puppy, which resulted in his losing the enamel on his teeth, making his vulnerable to dental issues. Unfortunately, the insurance company labels this as a pre-existing condition. I’m honestly amazed that his teeth have held up for this long. Now, at the age of 14, and with a heart murmur to boot, I’ve made the difficult decision to consult a dental specialist who has an anesthesiologist present during the procedure. As many of you can understand, the thought of Scooter undergoing anesthesia is incredibly stressful for me, especially after losing my beloved Thumbles.

The specialist has access to advanced technology, which gives me hope that we can do more than just extract his teeth. However, the cost is staggering. The anesthesiologist's fee alone is $1,750, and the total estimate for Scooter’s treatment ranges from $4,500 to $10,000. That’s an overwhelming amount! I’m praying it stays closer to the lower end. To add to the worry, his recent blood work raised some red flags, necessitating an ultrasound. I also need to undergo an ultrasound just two days later.

As you can imagine, these hefty expenses are piling up, especially after a recent move. If insurance would cover even a fraction of this, I wouldn’t be reaching out for help. Unfortunately, like many others, I’m grappling with an insurance system that feels inadequate when it matters most.
